Our farm used to be certified organic under the North Okanagan Organic Association
but we dropped our certification due to the requirements for certified organic chicks as well as certified organic slaughter, neither of which was available.
We are associate members of N.O.O.A. and very much appreciate the work that the
organisation does for the local, organic community. We continue to farm
according to the Canadian organic principles and standards but since dropping
our certified organic status, we have moved exclusively to a “Customer
Certified” system. We have customers who have come to inspect our farm the day
the chicks arrive, 2-3 times through the growing period, the night before
slaughter when we place them in crates (our goal is to crate the entire flock
without waking up any chickens) and back the next day to watch the slaughtering
process. We have several customers who have done this over the years and they
question our practises and changes that we make. Their interest and support has
really helped us to keep a fresh outlook and to constantly challenge ourselves
to find the healthiest, most sustainable and humane ways of raising poultry. Our
long-term plan is to transform our farm to an agro-forestry model over the
coming years since our observations of our birds’ behaviour strongly support
their preference for a mix of woodlands and pasture.
is a land-use system that integrates trees and shrubs with crops and/or
livestock production. It builds on the idea of ecological design to optimise
beneficial interactions between woody and other components. These interactions
can lead to higher productivity compared to conventional systems, and provide a
wide range of services including soil management, microclimate modification,
weed control, natural fencing, carbon sequestration and nutrient recycling. We have already seen the almost miraculous transformation of our poor thin soil over glacial till into lush, living pasture after the soil biota re-energise once the flock moves on.
Eco-agroforestry integrates agroforestry - combining trees with crops and
livestock - with organic principles to realise the full potential of agroforestry as a
self-sustaining diverse production system that works within ecological cycles
and supports ecosystem health. Agro-forestry systems are much better known in
Europe and Asia but Andrea’s and Steve’s diverse experience operating a woodland
shiitake mushroom farm in the Fraser Valley as well as production and sales in
the nursery industry, have them eager to embark on an agro-forestry transformation on this property.
